Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome to the school year.  I am thrilled to be your child’s teacher.  I am excited about the many wonderful things we will be doing this year in first grade.  With your support, this will be the best year ever.  In keeping with District Standards, I will be implementing a homework policy for first grade.  The students will have a weekly homework packet.  The packet will consist of a reading log in which I ask that the students read something of their choice for at least 20 minutes each night.  Be aware that the more a child practices reading, the better he or she becomes.  Please include the titles of each book read and sign the log, or the homework will be considered incomplete.  Also, students will have other activities each night in the subject areas of math and language arts.  These activities will enhance, extend, and reinforce what we are learning in the classroom.

Also included in the Homework folder will be a weekly plan.  This plan includes a report on work done in class and a conduct report.  I want you to be aware when your student is not completing  work in class as this will be reflected on the report card.  Please review this weekly plan and conduct report.  It is my way of keeping you informed.

It is important that the folder is returned each and every week.  The Homework Folder helps your child to keep their homework, notes, etc. organized and insures that important papers make it home.  It is also considered a part of the homework, and if it is not returned homework will be considered incomplete.

I will send weekly packets as opposed to daily packets so that your child can complete activities on the days that best suit you as a family.  The weekly packet will go home with the students in the homework folder on the first afternoon of the school week and will be due to me by the last morning of the same week.  Late homework will be accepted but only half credit will be given.  I will have a Homework club every five weeks for those students who have completed all their homework each week for 4 consecutive weeks.  Homework club will consist of lunch in the classroom with me, and I will bring a special dessert.

Our School Planner will go home daily so that you have access to special assignments, spelling words and an opportunity to communicate with me on a daily basis.  Include any comments or questions you may have and I will do the same!  I will check this section daily so that we (parent and teacher) can share our concerns.  Please provide a backpack large enough to accommodate the homework folder, planner, and books.

Parents are the key to making homework a positive experience for their children.  Please provide the necessary supplies, a quiet homework environment, a set time, positive praise, and support.  The written homework should take no more than 20-30 minutes each night in addition to the reading time.  If there is a problem please contact me at school.  Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Camps
