Welcome to the High Five Room!
Room 5 is teeming with wonderful books, both fiction and nonfiction.
We have sport books, riddle books, songbooks, poetry books and we do author
studies as well. We snuggle with books frequently at school just
as you do at home. Learning word families, compounds, contractions
and chunks in words helps us read with the fluency present in natural speech.
We look at the story elements of plot, setting, and characters in a story
as well as use sequence to retell the important parts. We develop
strong oral communication skills through poetry, music and responding to
literature. We expand the five sentence paragraph to include more
detailed descriptions while using correct capitalization, punctuation and
spelling appropriate for first grade. Spelling tests include word
families with high-frequency words. We read and develop comprehension
skills by including accelerated reader books and their corresponding quizzes
in our daily work.
Students will memorize the addition and subtraction facts to 20 and
work with coins including the quarter. We solve age-appropriate word
problems. So be prepared to hear a tune or two! We also learn
to compare data on a graph so that we can tell how many more or how many
less there are with respect to other elements of a group.
We begin the year with a study of matter and progress to weather, the
seasons and the study of living things. Songs are always a big part
of our learning units. We learn a lot about animals and their habits
from studying the rainforest and incubating chicken eggs.
Book Bags travel to each house on a biweekly basis and science experiments
spark up our day. In first grade amazing events do happen every day!
Just a reminder…
Students need a backpack labeled with first and last name. Every
student will receive a planner with important dates, homework requirements
and a place for comments. This will build student responsibility
and organization. Please ask to see it Monday through Thursday.
On weekends you can bond in other ways!
