Welcome to the 4th Grade!
Welcome to Room 12. My name is Mrs. Shannon and this is my fourth
year at Downtown Elementary School. I have been teaching for 10 years,
5 of those years at the middle school level teaching Math. I was
born in Bakersfield and attended schools in the Bakersfield City School
District. I am from a family of teachers. My husband, parents
and sisters are all teachers!
On the personal side, I love reading, running, watching a good movie
and playing with my two children, Madison, 5 1/2 and Maguire, 3 1/2.
Grades 4 academic goals
The academic goals include the following:
In social studies, 4th graders will learn about the State of
California. We will have our second annual Gold Rush days.
In math, students will master basic facts and will demonstrate
an understanding of computation and the ability to solve age-appropriate
word problems. All will be exposed to beginning algebra and geometry.
In language arts, students will read and analyze words, give
speeches, study whole language and phonics approaches to reading and spelling,
will practice all basic writing forms, as well as listening and speaking.
In science, students will learn the interactions of living things,
the changing Earth, and matter and electricity. Students will also
participate in the Science Fair, utilizing the scientific method.
Homework
Students will receive a weekly homework sheet every Monday. They
will also keep a daily record in a Downtown Elementary School organizer
that every student will be receiving this year.
School Supplies
All students in the 4th grade will need to bring an expandable file
folder to organize their classwork (must have at least six pockets).
It also has been requested that pens and pencils from home need to be
labeled with the students name on them and that no gel pens are used for
school work. Thank you.
