The following list of items was created to reflect the elements of
the Downtown Uniform Dress Code.
Shirts
Any ENTIRELY white, collared shirt. No trim colors are appropriate.
Shirt styles may include polo shirts with long or short sleeves, Oxford
dress shirts with long or short sleeves, and Peter Pan and Sailor collared
blouses for the girls.
Long and short sleeve polo shirts. Polo shirts in white, ash (not
solid gray), and navy without printing of any type may be worn. Polo
shirts with the school logo in any of these colors will also be acceptable.
Jade colored polo’s will no longer be accepted.
Turtle neck. Long or short sleeve knit shirts in white,
ash or navy only.
Jade green school logo tee-shirts. The only acceptable tee shirts
that may be worn on campus are the jade tee shirts with school logo and
ONLY IF PURCHASED AT MIKE’S UNIFORM. Tee shirts worn as undershirts
during cooler weather should have the school logo when there is the possibility
that the child may remove outer garments as the temperature fluctuates.
SCOOP NECK TEE SHIRTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE!
All shirts must be tucked into pants, skirts, skorts, shorts, and jumpers
at all times.
Pants and
shorts
Pants. Navy blue and khaki cotton twill dress or uniform style
slacks are acceptable on boys and girls at any time. Inappropriate styles
include military styles with side thigh pockets or pants designed as play
pants rather than dress trousers. Also, pants in a denim 5-pocket
style (2 flat pockets on the back) are not acceptable. Pants must
be of the appropriate size and length. Parents are asked to maintain
uniforms no more or less than one size too large or too small on their
children. No denim jeans of any style will be acceptable.
Shorts. Navy blue and khaki cotton twill walking length shorts
with or without cuffs will be accepted throughout the year. Inappropriate
styles include military styles with side thigh pockets or shorts designed
as play shorts rather than dress shorts. Also, shorts in denim 5-pocket
(2 flat pockets) are not acceptable. NO DRAWSTRING SHORTS ARE ACCEPTABLE!
Corduroy trousers. Navy blue and khaki corduroy dress or uniform
style trousers in both wide and narrow wale will be acceptable during the
colder weather months. Pants must fit appropriately being neither
too long in the inseam nor to low on the hip. Parents are asked to
maintain uniforms no more or less than one size too large or too small
on their children.
Pull-up uniform slacks and shorts for Kindergarten only. Pull-up
style slacks, shorts, and skorts with elastic style waistbands will be
acceptable on kindergarten students only. As children master the
use of zippers and buttons, parents are encouraged to introduce regular
uniform apparel in the child’s wardrobe.
Navy Blue
and khaki jumper dresses and skorts
Navy blue and khaki cotton twill uniform jumper dresses and skorts are
acceptable. Girls must wear appropriate undergarments when wearing skirts
and dresses. Girls are encouraged to wear shorts under skirts at
all times as this will facilitate physical activities and floor exercises.
Skirts must be of an appropriate length falling, at minimum, to the end
of the child’s fingertips when her arms are hung comfortably at her side.
NO OVERALL OR SPAGHETTI STRAPS ON JUMPERS ARE ACCEPTABLE!
Plaid uniform skirts, skorts, and jumpers. Only those plaid jumpers
in the adopted Downtown School plaid are acceptable. Girls
must wear appropriate undergarments when wearing skirts and dresses.
Girls are encouraged to wear shorts under skirts at all times as this will
facilitate physical activities and floor exercises. Skirts must be of an
appropriate length falling, at minimum, to the end of the child’s fingertips
when her arms are hung comfortably at her side.
Outer garments
Sweatshirts, sweaters, and lightweight jackets. Solid color crew
neck, cardigan, and hooded sweatshirts. Sweaters, or jackets in navy, ashe,
white, and jade may be worn. Items with the school logo are acceptable
as long as they are without additional adornment such as stripes, football
logos, etc. NO LOGOS OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL LOGO ARE ACCEPTABLE.
Coats. Jackets that do not contain words, large logos, team
identification, etc. will be accepted. HEAVY OUTER JACKETS SHOULD
BE REMOVED IN THE CLASSROOM IF THEY ARE NOT IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE SOLID
NAVY, ASH, OR WHITE COLOR-CODE.
Shoes
Appropriate shoes should be a priority. As students are required
to participate in physical activities such as running, jumping, skipping,
etc., dress shoes, sandals without back straps, and thong style shoes of
any type are not acceptable. Parents are also discouraged from sending
girls in high heals, slippery or uncomfortable dress shoes, and platform
shoes that are more than 1_” off the ground. Parents are discouraged
from sending children in shoes that may restrict their full participation
in school activities.
Socks, tights, and leggings. Socks must compliment the school’s
uniform choices. Socks, tights, and leggings are to be in solid colors
of navy, white, jade, khaki, and ash only.
Belts (optional). Children are encouraged to wear belts when pants
provide belt loops. Kindergarten and first grade children may
struggle with a belt and should not wear them until they are capable of
adjusting them on their own. Belts are to be appropriate for the
uniform. Military belt buckles with initial letters will not be accepted.
Belts should extend no more than 4” beyond the buckle.
The Uniform Committee will continue to meet as needed to address uniform
concerns and to adjust the policy to meet the needs of the families we
serve.
Mike’s Uniform Company on 18th Street will be the official distributor
of school logo apparel and the school’s adopted plaid jumpers and skirts.
Navy, khaki, and white apparel may be purchased at most department stores
and Costco, and through catalogues.
Hair
Students are expected to maintain a natural hair coloring. Students
who die hair in colors other than those considered natural (i.e.: blonde,
black, brown, etc.) will be asked to correct the color before returning
to school.
