Fremont Magnet Elementary

5th Grade Science

Standard

2f Students know plants use carbon dioxide (CO2) and energy from sunlight to build molecules of sugar and release oxygen.

2g Students know plant and animal cells break down sugar to obtain energy, a process resulting in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (respiration).

Plant Parts Review

Last week you learned the name and function of plant parts

Water and minerals are transported by _____________

  leaves

phloem

xylem

Which part of a plant is the food factory (the part that makes food for the plant)

  stem

leaves

root

Which part of a plant provides support

root
stem
leaf

What is Photosynthesis?

 SUNLIGHT + CO2 + H2O   =    SUGAR + O2

This is the scientific way of explaining photosynthesis, but it is a little confusing.  Let's break it down to something simpler so that it makes sense.

Look at the picture.

O2 is Oxygen.

CO2  is Carbon Dioxide.

H2O is water.

SUNLIGHT + CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER  go into the plant

Then the plant leaves change it into SUGAR + OXYGEN.

Here is a Brainpop movie about photosynthsis

So where does the carbon dioxide come from?

To find the answer click here and then click on the picture that looks like this Illuminating Photosynthesis and choose "The Cycle".

After you've watched The Cycle, click on

"Atomic Shuffle" and read the poem that explains what's happening.

Try to answer the "Three Puzzlers".
Write or draw what you learned about Photosynthesis.

Part 2

Now lets learn more about plants by visiting Revise Wise

bullet Go through the movie and help Herbie Side fix his plant problems.
bullet After that carefully read the plant facts and then take the test.
bullet Write or draw what you learned about plants.
