African Art: Aesthetics and Meaning
- The objects selected for this exhibit were chosen both to exemplify
African aesthetic and moral principles and to display some of the finest
pieces in the Bayly's large collection. Most of the pieces in the exhibit
come from West African societies.

- "African artifacts have generally been exhibited with reference only
to cultural context and use. In view of recent studies of African
aesthetic principles and related moral and religious values, there is
good reason to emphasize the formal aesthetic aspects of the objects and
the moral and religious ideas they express."

From the African-American Mosaic
- For African-Americans, "migration from the South has long been a
significant feature of Black history. An early exodus from the South
occurred between 1879 and 1881, when about 60,000 African-Americans moved
into Kansas and others settled in the Oklahoma Indian Territories in
search of social and economic freedom." This presentation from the
Library of Congress documents some of those migrations.

Train to Freedom
- "The study includes a general overview of the Underground Railroad,
with a brief discussion of slavery and abolitionism, escape routes used
by slaves, and alternatives to commemorate and interpret the signficance
of the phenomenon."

- This database presents primary source materials documenting the
cultural history of the American South from the viewpoint of Southerners.
It offers diaries, autobiographies, travel accounts, titles on slavery
and regional literature drawn from the splendid Southern holdings of the
UNC--CH Academic Affairs Library. To date we have digitized and encoded
over 80 titles, or 18,000 pages of primary source materials and published
them on the WWW.

Pennsylvania. The prosecution demanded the death sentence on the basis of
