- Students applying for federal student aid must
complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The most
important advice we can give about completing the FAFSA is to READ THE
INSTRUCTIONS. The instructions included with the application explain how
each question is to be answered. Because the instructions cannot address
every possible family situation, in this document we will discuss the
purpose of the FAFSA questions and discuss how information should be
reported in some unusual cases.

- During the past four decades the California Student Aid
Commission has provided financial aid for more than two generations of
students to help them with the costs of higher education. The equivalent
of nearly one-in-eleven Californians has benefited directly from its
college assistance programs. The Commission guaranteed over $1.8 billion
in student loans for the 1994-95 academic year, an overall volume increase
of 10.4 percent over the prior year.
