INTERNET SAFETY TIPS

  • Teach your children to be careful about strangers on the Internet.
  • Teach your children how to log off the Internet, especially if inappropriate content pops up.
  • Teach your children to never give their real last name, address, or telephone number to anyone; if someone asks for this information (or for your password), teach them not to respond. Have them log off and tell you about it.
  • Teach your children to ask you for permission before they get on the net.

In a few months our students will be taking a series of standardized test.  This site has sample test taken from actual questions that once appeared on the California Standards Test (CST).  Once you are on this site, you will have to scroll down in order to find your child’s grade and content.  I invite you to take a few sample tests.  If your child is a 5th grade student have him/her take the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade sample test.  This site contains test for all grade levels.  Once they have completed the test, review the questions and answers with your child.

The state of California is not the only state that has to take standardized tests.  This site from the state of Tennessee has a few sample tests, much like the ones that our students will be taking in California. Visit this site and see how well your child might do in Tennessee.  Remember, math is math no matter what state you find yourself in and the same goes for reading comprehension.

This is probably one of the best sites that I have seen.  This site allows your child to take a test on your computer.  Once your child has completed the test, the computer will let you know how he/she did.  It will also tell you what specific areas your child needs help in (author’s purpose, cause and effect, and main idea to name a few).  Your child will also be able to practice that specific skill and take another test to help develop that skill.  Have fun with this site and try taking tests from another state, just for fun.

Every time you walk on the ground you step on billions of microbes. Microbes live in the soil, on rocks, inside roots, buried under miles of Earth, in compost piles and toxic waste, and all over the Earth's surface. Microbes are found in boiling hot springs and on frozen snowfields. Microbes live in homes, in schools and on statues.  Visit this site to learn more on microbes and where they can be found.

This is a fun interactive website that will allow your child to fine tune some educational skills while playing a game. My favorite game on this site is Mathblox because your child can practice putting a math equation together to earn points.  This site can also reinforce language arts, science, social science and various other subjects.

This site offers Internet-based learning activities and interactive activities and suggestions.  Be sure to visit the Tools section and play one of their many interactive games.  Like with many Internet games, cable connections are faster than dial up connections and you might need to download Shockwave to view and play on some of the sites.
