Hello, my name is Mr. Stevens; I am the 7th and 8th grade counselor at Sierra Middle School.  Part of my responsibility is to counsel with students individually and in groups.  The length of each group or individual session is approximately 30 minutes.  Some of the guidance and counseling goals will be:

        1.    To help students feel better about themselves.
        2.    To help students talk over school-related concerns.
        3.    To help students achieve greater success socially.
        4.    To help students learn to make decisions, set goals, solve problems.
        5.    To increase success in the academic/educational program.
        6.    To increase communication skills.
        7.    To discuss student's interests and ambitions at school.
        8.    To explore possible career ambitions and interests.

Hello, I am Susan Hall, the 6th grade counselor at Sierra.  My job involves the following programs:

    1.    Various school award programs:  Honor Roll, Principal's List, Outstanding Student of the Month, and assemblies for the 6th graders.
    2.    I also help organize and assist in many of our student extra-curricular activities; drill team, flag team, dance team, "Say No to Drugs" Program and Garza Elementary             Tutorial Program.
    3.    I work with the Sierra Student Council to provide leadership opportunities for our        advisory representatives and student body officers in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades.
    4.    I also counsel students individually and in groups.  My groups last 40 minutes and we meet once a week.   We also work on the following issues:

            a)    Help students with self-esteem.
            b)    Provide the opportunity to talk over school problems and work on social                     success.
            c)    To assist in the goal setting/decision process-academically, socially & personally.
            d)    To improve communication skills.
            e)    To increase student level of academic & educational progress.
            f)     To explore students interest & ambitions in school and their future.

Things To Do @ Sierra Middle School

Achievers Cal. State Bakersfield students volunteer to tutor our students,  helping them with their homework and classwork.  Meetings  are every Tuesday and Thursday at lunchtime in Room #22 for 7th and 8th graders and in the auditorium for 6th graders.
Active Parenting of Teens Support groups for parents on how to effectively  guide students through adolescent years.  Spanish classes are also available.
Band/Orchestra Instrumental music program with Mr. Aguilar in room #39.
Birthday Celebrations 6th graders have an ice cream & cake party the third Friday  of each month.  The 7th & 8th graders receive special birthday cards and a prize.
Boy Scouts Meetings take place in Mr. Bremer's room #4, 2:30pm to 4:00pm every Friday.
Career Day Community guest speakers talk about careers to the 8th graders.
Cheerleaders Cheer for girls and boys sports, when they are at home or at other BCSD schools. 
Chess Club Monday through Thursday in Mr. Bremer's room # 4.
Choir Sing with the Mr. Williams in room #23.  They sing at school, parades and concerts.
Community Projects Kern Food Bank, Thanksgiving dance, visit nursing homes, help the elderly and other worthwhile projects.  See Mrs. Hall.
Counseling RIK--Resilient Independent Kids, KCEOC groups, Department of Human Service groups, Say No to Drugs.   See Mrs. Hall and Mr. Stevens.
D.A.T.E Say No to drugs and alcohol, be wiser, live longer.  Assemblies at lunchtime at random dates.
Drama Lights, camera, action...put on plays for the student body. Practice designing sets, costumes and make-up.  Mrs. Graf's room #14.  Meets Wednesday and Thursdays, 2:30pm to 3:30pm
Drill, Flag & Dance Teams Commit to one practice per week after school.  March in all of the parades.  Wear uniforms for spirit days on Fridays.  See Mrs. Hall.
Garza Project Sierra honor roll students walk next door to help the kids in Garza Elementary School with reading and math
Homework Club Each grade level will design their own homework club.  It can be after school or during lunch.
Intramurals During lunch, students participate in team sports.  Flag football, hockey, soccer, basketball, and softball are the sports that the students will play during the course of the school year. 
Library Reading Club Wednesdays after school with our librarian, Mrs. Funk.
Math Bowl Competitions with our top math students.
M.E.S.A A G.P.A. of 3.0 or better meets Thursdays during second lunch in room #20 with Ms. Galicia.  This group competes in science and mathematics.
Mural Club Students will learn techniques of painting murals for beautification of our school.  Times to be announced.
Music Club Sign up with the Mr. Aguilar in room #24 to play the guitar or keyboards or even our own Mariachi group.
Oral Language In English class learn special speaking programs, verse choir, individual, humorous, etc. After school.
Outstanding Student          of the Month For outstanding behavior, work, most improved. Students are nominated by their teachers.
Principal's List G.P.A. between 3.0 and 4.0 for each trimester.
R.I.K. Resilient Independent Kids meeting in counseling groups to work on success in school with friends and at home. Mondays and Thursdays, 2:40pm - 3:40pm in the counseling trailer.
Science Fair Make science projects on computers and with special boards to be put on display in the Sierra auditorium, see science teachers.
Sports Teams Sierra puts a team out for every sport that has competition in BCSD district and even some in the Boys & Girls Club of Bakersfield.
Student Council Each room has a representative and they meet with the student body officers to help plan special activities.
