Seventh Grade:
The seventh grade curriculum that Mr. Frutos and Mr. Handley are covering this year includes the scientific method, science process skills, and broad topic of life science.   Through out the year they will be covering from single celled organisms (monerans and protists) to complex organisms such as mammals.  They will also be studying kingdoms plantae and Fungi.  Through out their course of study they will be covering California State Science Standards as well as SAT 9 content clusters.
Around January we will starting our Science Projects.  These are a very important part of our curriculum.  Students will apply the scientific method and use the science process skills that they have been learning through out the year.  Because it is primarily a home project, we request your support in helping your child complete this major assignment.  Our culminating activities will include a class presentation, school science fair, and for the winners--the county science fair.  We look forward to a fun filled educational year with your child.

Eighth Grade:
Mrs. Wooden's eighth grade science class will be focusing in on the California State and SAT 9 standards.  We will be exploring the world of Physical Science which will include physics, chemistry and astronomy.  These topics will encompass laws of motion, work, machines, energy, as well as a study of the atom, chemical bonding, compounds and reactions.  Our introduction to astronomy will include the formation of our solar system, our family of planets, and the universe beyond.   Incorporated into the curriculum will be many opportunities for experimentation and exploration.
Throughout the year we will also be focusing in on the scientific method and science process skills.  As a culminating activity, students will be doing a science project starting in January.  Because it is primarily a home project, I request your support in helping your child complete this major assignment.  At the end of February students will have an opportunity to share what they have learned by doing their project with their classmates.  Selected students will then compete in our school science fair in March.  The winners will have an opportunity to go onto the next level of competition, the county science fair.  I look forward to exploring the world of physical science with your child this year, it should be exciting and rewarding.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye

While not eating crickets, building "air expansion devices", and generally delighting in watching students eyes bulge at the wonders of the universe (our science demonstrations), the science department at Sierra Middle School is looking forward to the science fair competition this year.  The students and teachers are ready and "pumped" for this event.
Check out our science links that will whisk you to those topics that leave our students in awe.
