American Life In the Forties
- The Forties: War
and Peace
- "It was the best of times and the worst of times: It's a Wonderful
Life and six million Jewish deaths. ``White Christmas'' and black lists.

V-J Day." A look at the 1940s by the Oak Ridge National Laboratories,
where top secret projects were carried out with atomic energy.

- Lots of material on the life of a major WWII journalist,
Edward R.Murrow, who also had a great impact on American journalism.
- Architecture and
Interior Design for 20th Century America (1935-1955)
- Over 29,000
images primarily of architectural subjects, including interiors and
exteriors of homes, stores, offices, factories, historic buildings,homes
of notable Americans, and of several U.S. presidents, as well as color
images of the 1939-40 New York World's Fair. Many were commissioned by
architects, designers, owners and architectural publications, and document
important achievements in American 20th-century architecture and interior
design.

Portraits by Carl Van Vechten, 1932-1964
- 1,400 Portraits of literary figures, artists, and celebrities; scenic
views, mostly in the Northeast. Includes African Americans, celebrities
and prominent individuals, scenic views. Consists of 1,395 photographs
taken by American photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964) between 1932
and 1964. The bulk of the collection consists of portrait photographs of
celebrities, including many figures from the Harlem Renaissance. A much
smaller portion of the collection is an assortment of American landscapes.
- Social Security
History
- Exceptionally well presented collection of information on the history
of the Social Security program and Social Security Administration. A mix
of general-interest material and items that may appeal primarily to
scholars. Graphics and photos abound, and there are sound and video
clips.
- "Screwball
Comedies
- A style of movie comedy that flourished during the Great Depression
and into the first part of the 1940s decade. Helpful in understanding how
Americans endured the hard times of that era.
- Woody Guthrie
- A popular folk singer and writer of the Thirties and Forties who had
a major influence on American life, including Sixties rock music. Wrote:
"This Land Is Your Land."
- Old Time Radio Timelines
- Major events and personalities in the history or Radio in America are
presented here. Audio files allow for listening to parts of selected
episodes (RealAudio required for listening).
- The Jinx
Falkenberg Page
- Actress Jinx Falkenburg was not only an actress and glamour girl in
the forties but also an accomplished comedian who appeared in several
comedies and musicals. Among her movies are the cult classics "Two Latins
from Manhattan" (1941) and "Two Senoritas from Chicago" (1943). In
addition to being a star in the twilight period of Hollywood's golden age
Jinx was also Chile's champion free-style swimmer and the top American
cover girl of the early forties.

- "Welcome to Nizkor, a collage of projects focused on the Holocaust,
and its denial, often referred to as Holocaust "revisionism.", a label we
reject out of hand as being misleading and dishonest."
- Anne Frank, Her
Life and Times
- Includes the following sections: Anne's Stroy, The Holocaust, The
Diary, The Annex. "Over one million children under the age of sixteen
died in the Holocaust. Anne Frank was one of them."
- The "Final Solution"
- "The origin of the "Final Solution," the Nazi plan to exterminate the
Jewish people, remains uncertain. What is clear is that the genocide of
the Jews was the culmination of a decade of Nazi policy, under the rule
of Adolf Hitler. The "Final Solution" was implemented in stages."

- This summary is provided by the U.S. Holocaust Museum, and outlines
the major events in its overview. "The Holocaust was the systematic,
bureaucratic annihilation of six million Jews by the Nazi regime and
their collaborators as a central act of state during World War II."

Holocaust Rescuers
- This bibliography (including some links to online resources) lists
works in English which discuss the lives and actions of rescuers during
the Holocaust. Individuals, groups, and in the case of Denmark, almost
an entire country, reached out. Bulgaria was also active in protecting
its Jewish population.
- Rescue in Denmark
- "Throughout the Holocaust, millions of people silently stood by while
they saw Jews, Roma (Gypsies), and other "enemies of the Reich" being
rounded up and deported. Many of these bystanders told themselves that
what they saw happening was none of their business. Others were too
frightened to help. In many places, providing shelter to Jews was a
crime punishable by death.... Denmark was the only occupied country that
actively resisted the Nazi regime's attempts to deport its Jewish citizens."

- Those who did aid Jews were motivated by opposition to Nazi racism,
by compassion, or by religious or moral principle. In a few rare
instances, entire communities as well as individuals helped save Jews.
They did so at tremendous risk. In many places, providing shelter to Jews
was punishable by death.

and Resistance
- This exhibition "allows us to understand how in Belgium nearly one
out of two Jews perished during the Second World War. Furthermore, it is
not only a museum about the deportation of Belgian Jews, but also about
their resistance. Thanks to the support they received from the Belgian
people, many managed to escape from their Nazi pursuers and their
collaborators."
