DR. WALTER W. STIERN

    Dr. Walter W. Stiern was born in San Diego, CA  March 8, 1914.  His family originally was from Bakersfield, California and they moved back to Bakersfield before he started school.

    After graduating from high school, he attended Bakersfield College, then continued on to Washington State.   While there he met and married Alysjune "June" Dunning.  He graduated with a degree in Veterinary Medicine and his wife later received a degree in Sociology.   They moved back to Bakersfield and he opened his Veterinary practice.  Eventually they were to become the proud parents of two daughters, Janet Palmer and Christie Goehring.

    Dr. Walter W. Stiern served in World War II and then returned home to spend the next twenty years practicing veterinary medicine and becoming an active part of the agricultural community.

    In 1957, Stiern became a California State Senator from Bakersfield.  He was known for his tireless advocacy of education, health and agricultural issues. He always felt that his two greatest achievements while in the Senate were his efforts to expand the community college system and establish a state college in Bakersfield.   The California State University Bakersfield (CSUB) established a library in his name.   It is therefore fitting that our school be named for this outstanding leader who so strongly promoted education.
