A Message from the Principal,

Dear Thorner Families, We are well into our third quarter finishing our second trimester in sixth grade. Daily lessons are aligned to Focus Standards for every grade level. Daily homework and weekly homework packets concentrate on these Focus Standards. How can parents help at home? Check your child's homework assignments daily. If your child says they do not have homework, contact the teacher immediately. Our district requires homework. Thorner staff also requires daily reading at home for 15-20 minutes. The pages are to be recorded on the Reading Log Forms, turned in to the child's teacher and recorded for the Accelerated Reader Program. Discuss current events, articles and books with your child and limit television viewing in the evening. Daily attendance is an important issue. Thorner goal is 97% attendance. The District Attorney's Office now requires schools to carefully monitor Attendance and Tardies. What does that mean for your family? If your child has more than 14 excused absences a doctor's note is required. Students who attend school daily become successful, literate citizens. Our school is awarding incentives to students and classes that have the highest attendance. The STAR test will be given beginning May 3. We are preparing your children to achieve high academic goals as well as strategizing how to successfully glean important information. Thorner students exceeded the state mandate of improving Academic Performance Index and Adequate Yearly Progress. Every year, a higher goal is set with the intent of improving academic achievement for every child. Helping your child with homework, reviewing math facts and setting aside time for silent reading will help them surpass expectations. Our school is such an awesome place because of our parents and families. Thank you so very much for your continuing support. Margaret Gallegos

Thorner staff welcomes Officer Glen Davis, School Resource Officer. A recent grant award has allowed police officers to be assigned to all elementary and middle schools in the BCSD. This officer will intervene with truancy, serve as a mentor and enforce the law. He is radar-trained to enforce speed limits around the school and will assist patrol officers with other incidents that take place in this area. He is available to talk to classrooms. Officer Davis is our sixth grade DARE officer and makes presentations to our sixth graders every Tuesday about Drug and Alcohol Abuse. If there are any concerns or issues you would like for him to address let the office know. He has already been a support in traffic control and speaking with some of our students and making home visits.

Word of the Month- Integrity

Please check THE LOST AND FOUND in the cafeteria often, and please label your child's belongings. If your child accidentally comes home with clothing that belongs to someone else, please return them to school. Sometimes while children are changing for their Magnet Classes things get misplaced.

Telephone Book Recycling
February 14 - March 25
Teachers keep track of the number
of phone books students bring in. If
you have a lot of phone books please
take them directly to the bin and give
the teacher a signed note with the
number of phone books.
Let's be # 1 again this year!

Magnet News

This week is Seussical! What a spectacular job! Students, parents, and staff really went above and beyond with this delightful production. We hope that you will bring your families to the Education Center at 1300 Baker Street on Wednesday February 16th, and Thursday February 17th at 7 p.m. Cost is $2.00 per adult and $1.00 per child. The third trimester of Magnet is just around the corner. Please look carefully at the class choices offered and return your form to the Magnet Office as soon as possible. During the third trimester we have Spotlight on the Arts, the theme for this year's Spotlight is Movie Mania with Ms. Ashley Busby as the director. We really appreciate all the patient parents at five o'clock. Please remember that students are to be picked up by 5:15 p.m. at the latest. It is understandable that occasionally parents get stuck in traffic but if you can not make it to school at this time, please make other arrangements for your child. Also, if there is an emergency and you will be late, please call the magnet office at 631-4568. Thank you for your wonderful and talented children.

Valentine Wishes for Walker

On Valentine's Day Mrs. Rickels's and Mrs. Charpentier's classes took a walking field trip to visit Walker Frayne and wish him a Happy Valentine's Day. Several classmates and friends took along their Valentine cards to wish him a happy day in person. The Frayne family had baked special cookies with a scrambled message on each for the students. Walker has been battling leukemia and lymphoma since late August and remains at home throughout his treatment. The Third graders were very excited to see their friend and wish him a quick and speedy recovery.
